(ECNS) -- The parents of Huugjilt, an 18-year-old man whose convictions for rape and murder were recently expunged, will apply for state compensation at the Inner Mongolia Higher People's Court, the Mirror reported on Wednesday.
Huugjilt was found guilty of raping and murdering a woman in a public toilet in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, on April 9, 1996, and convicted of the crimes on May 23. Just 18 days later, he was executed.
Another man named Zhao Zhihong, an alleged serial rapist and murderer, confessed to the crimes in 2005.
After Huugjilt's parents submit their application for state compensation, judicial offices must respond within 60 days.
The amount of compensation we apply for will reflect the costs and mental damage the wrongful charge has caused, said Huugjilt's parents, adding that they hope the compensation could be fulfilled before 2015 Chinese Lunar New Year.
The Inner Mongolia Higher People's Court will make a decision after Huugjilt's parents submit their application, said Li Shengchen, a spokesperson for the court.
