(ECNS) -- Yingying, a female panda given to Hong Kong on the 10th anniversary of its return to Chinese rule, will be sent back to the mainland to mate, mingpaoweekly.com reported.
Hong Kong Ocean Park zoo said that though Yingying never fell pregnant during her time in Hong Kong, the nine-year-old is in good health and is expected to successfully mate with mainland males.
If Yingying should successfully give birth, her offspring would be divided between Hong Kong and the mainland, based on the agreement.
As for the nine-year-old male panda Lele, his sperm will be sent to the mainland and used for artificial insemination. If this proves a success, the cubs would remain there.
