(ECNS) -- The laying of a 13,618 kilometer submarine telecommunications cable system has got approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's top economic body.
The New Crossing-Pacific Cable System (NCP) would connect various parts of the world, including China and the United States. It aims to address the intense traffic demand for broadband, mobile, applications, content and enterprise data exchange on the Trans-Pacific route.
China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom are among a consortium of global companies set to build and operate the system
The project will feature the latest high-quality 6-fiber-pair cable and optical transmission technologies, with an initial design capacity of 60Tb/s (100Gb/s x 100 wavelengths x 6 fiber-pairs).
It will be moored to Chongming and Nanhui in Shanghai as well as other areas in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
The system is targeted to be ready-for-service in 2018.
