(ECNS) - Hong Kong ranks eighth globally and second in Asia on the Sustainable Cities Index from Arcadis, a leading consultancy firm, Ming Pao reports.
The index explores social (People), environmental (Planet) and economic (Profit) demands to rank 50 of the world's leading cities in sustainability. Among the top ten cities, seven are in Europe and three are in Asia.
Hong Kong excels on the Profit sub-index, which examines performance from a business perspective, ranking third among all cities.
Hong Kong takes sixth place in the People category, which rates elements such as health, education, income inequality and work-life balance.
The city leads the way in university education and life expectancy, and offers its people the highest percentage of green space, according to the Arcadis report.
The report also says that Hong Kong's ranking is affected by the relative imbalance between life and work.
A number of global cities are too expensive for people to live in, the report adds.
