(ECNS) - No Chinese peacekeepers in Mali have been injured during more than 70 emergencies, including rocket attacks and suspicious intrusions, the PLA Daily reported on Sunday.
China sent its second batch of 245 officers and soldiers to Mali on a peacekeeping mission in Jan 2014. Since assuming duties in September, they have experienced more than 70 emergencies.
The absence of casualties is due to a high security alert and effective measures, despite increasing violence and a worsening situation, a military official said.
The peacekeepers in Mali frequently conduct defense drills and hold regular meetings to improve security and emergency capabilities, according to the newspaper.
The team, which will be stationed for eight months, is tasked with repairing roads and bridges, airport runways and facilities at camps; safeguarding the security of mission headquarters; and providing medical treatment and epidemic prevention.
"Our own safety is not the purpose, and our ultimate aim is to ensure regional security. It is ok to endure some hardships while contributing to the peace," said Guan Tairan, one of the peacekeepers.
