(ECNS) - China has called for exploration of intelligent manufacturing systems, especially driverless automobiles that use a 5G wireless network, the Chongqing Evening News reported Wednesday.
"Intelligent manufacturing systems will be China's new area of economic growth in the future," said Cao Shumin, chairman of the China Academy of Information and Communication Technology.
Information consumption across the country has increased by 25 percent over the same period last year, reaching 2.8 trillion yuan ($0.45 trillion), she said.
According to Miao Wei, head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the China Academy of Information and Communication Technology is working on 5G wireless network application.
A 5G wireless network, referring to fifth generation mobile networks or fifth generation wireless systems, could provide wider bandwidth and faster internet access, which could be applied to intelligent automobile and internet-connected cars, Miao said.
Driverless automobiles have become a new development for internet giants like Google, Apple Inc., and LeTV, a famous domestic video-sharing website, Miao added.
However, it is difficult to realize because of complications in assessing damage liability when accidents happen, he said.
