A visit to the ongoing The Magic of the Mexican Stamp exhibition at the Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art offers visitors a glimpse of the long history and rich civilization of this central-American country.

Influential artists

Stamp artworks created by 52 influential contemporary artists from Mexico are on display, with a limited-edition of 100 for each print, each of which are signed and numbered.

According to the museum, this art form of the "stamp" is described as "a flexible support, generally paper, where an image (line, form, stain and color) has been transferred from a mold that has been previously worked with a graphic art procedure."

The artworks' themes largely focus on the subjects of war and religion, and they help to document the sometimes complicated history of Mexican society. Most of the works are created by using a technique using black ink.

By virtue of the joint collecting efforts of the MUNAE National Print Museum, the National Institute of Fine Arts, and other Mexican institutions, the exhibition commemorates the bicentennial of the independence of Mexico and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution. It achieves this by picturing the collective and cinematographic memory of Mexico.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Mexico, and the exhibition, organized by the Shanghai Duolun MoMA and Consulate General of Mexico in Shanghai - functions as a tribute to this memorial year. "The artworks denote freedom, independence and revolution," Rolando Garcia Alonso, consul general of Mexico in Shanghai, told the Global Times.
