A concert of traditional Chinese music hit the stage in Shanghai on Friday. The concert showcased a full range of Chinese traditional music elements.

The latest creation by the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra took the audience back to a time three thousand years ago.

The music was inspired by the "Book of Songs", the first poetry collection in Chinese history. The "Book of Songs" paints a vivid picture of life from the 11th to the 6th century BC. It is also where the word "Zhongguo", or "China" first appeared on literary record. The music makes full use of ancient musical instruments like chimes and drums.

Audience member said, "The music is full of historical feeling. It feels like an epic."

Guzheng player Luo Xiaoci played her latest creation "Play of Ink" in the performance. The artist is a calligraphy fan in her spare time, and integrates her understanding of calligraphy's philosophy and rhythm into her music.

Following her, all types of traditional musical instruments were showcased.

Wang Fujian, director of Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, said, "It's a creative performance and it also demonstrates the diversity and abundance of Chinese music."

Friday's concert opens the doors to a series of performances this season from the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra.
