The Chinese Culture Contest has crowned its first champions. The event was held in Xiamen, a major city in east China's Fujian province. Unlike other similar competitions, the participants in this contest were all foreign teenagers of Chinese descent.

Hosted by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, the contest grew out of a smaller edition that's been held 3 times in the past. However, the new contest is larger in scale and focuses more on the talent show portion.

About 360,000 ethnic Chinese teenagers from 19 countries entered, but only 18 qualified for the final round. In the finals, the contestants had their knowledge of Chinese culture tested, with questions about history, art, food and medicine.

They were also asked to share their views about modern China. In the end, a number of individual awards were handed out, and the team from Malaysia was named the overall winner.
