As the new year approaches, two distinctive lantern shows in the city of Guiyang in Southwest China and the city of Nanjing in East China are drawing in crowds.

As the new year approaches, two distinctive lantern shows in the city of Guiyang in Southwest China and the city of Nanjing in East China are drawing in crowds. This year's show is also bringing some fresh innovations.
The lantern show in Guiyang kicked off on Monday night. There were over 180 major light sets on display. An eye-catcher among them is this, a huge drum shaped light set. A closer look is even more striking, it is clad with over 10 thousand pieces of porcelain.
Porcelain is very reflective, and together with the lights, the entire set gives off a very strong shine.
The organizers are displaying traditional themes with modern lighting technology. The sets are also designed to be energy efficient.
Sun Dongpeng, Architect of Guizhou Lantern Festival, said, "We used 10% more eco-friendly lighting than last year, and will increase energy efficiency by about 10%."
The lantern show will last for 21 days and is expected to attract more than 2 million visitors.
Meanwhile, the Qinhuai lantern show in the city of Nanjing begins on Wednesday. The event will be divided into 8 sections covering many temples and old parts of the city. For a more informative experience, many lights provide QR codes for people to scan with their mobile phones to get an introduction. Visitors can even interact with the display by sending their own photos onto some of the texts. Traditional snacks in the area will also tickle your taste buds.
The show will last until April 6th.
