A thousand-year-old story, told through a single pair of hands, conjuring millions of soldiers. This is the magic of shadow puppetry.
Shadow play, or shadow puppetry, is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment in China. The folk art's moving music, exquisite designs and lively performance has made it part of New Year's celebrations in many parts of the country.
Behold. A thousand-year-old story, told through a single pair of hands, conjuring millions of soldiers. This is the magic of shadow puppetry.
This local troupe in Northwest China's Qinghai Province is made up of 5 artists: one operates the puppets, one narrates the story through song and the others are in charge of the instruments. Their artistry makes them highly sought-after among local villages.
Troupe member Lan Xingbang said, "We tour to a dozen of villages every year during the Spring Festival. Two gigs per day, one during the day, the other at night. "
Villager Ma Tinglu said, "I've watched the puppet show since I was 8 or 9 years old. I'm now 70 and I still love it. For me it's an integral part of the new year celebration."
And in eastern China's Zhejiang Province, it's a different style of shadow puppetry, but one that's just as entertaining. On show is a dramatic myth of the monkey king. It proved to be a smash hit during the Spring Festival.
Many just can't resist the curiosity to see what's going on behind the white cloth screen.
Audience member said, "I've never seen anything like it before, it's amazing!"
Shadow play originated during the Han Dynasty, some 2 thousand years ago. Puppets made of leather are moved using sticks and used to tell dramatic versions of historical stories and fairy tales. The ancient art has stood the test of time and continues to bring joy and happiness to the Chinese people.
