French music is the theme at Yugong Yishan, one of hottest music clubs music in Beijing.
Four groups from four different French-speaking countries stun the audience with their diverse styles. The poetic and dreamy melodies of Canadian indie folk singer Klô Pelgag are followed by a fusion of pop and electronica by Benjamin Schoos & Sophie Galet.
The Belgian duo has worked together for 15 years and just celebrated their tenth anniversary last month. Their latest album is called "Chinese girl", so it's no surprise that they found an actual Chinese girl to play with them.
Li Han, an Er-hu player from the China National Orchestra, has been invited to join them for a dash of east-meets-west.
"When I first saw her playing the first time this afternoon, I was so impressed that I almost cried. It's very deep sound and melancholy sound. And it's wonderful."
The trio only had one rehearsal before the show, but their improvisation seamlessly blends Chinese and French music into this song.
"It's an amazing experience to work with them. Their music is sort of jazzy and their interaction is terrific. By adding Chinese elements, it worked out very well. The cooperation is joyful."
The band says they are looking forward to more cooperation with Chinese musicians.
"If she was in the studio in Brussels, I would phone to her and say 'come back,we'll record the track!' Because it's really wonderful instrument. She has to come back here, more in Europe."
The event is organized by a network that includes the embassies of Canada, Switzerland, Belgium and the Alliance Francaise in Beijing. "Mars en Folie" will tour China's 13 major cities and conclude in Macau on March 23rd.
