The Forbidden City will open 76 percent of its total area to the public by 2020.
Shan Jixiang, curator of the Palace Museum, said currently only 46 percent of the museum is open to the public.
An important reason for increasing the visiting area is to alleviate the tourist pressure, he explained. The price will not increase.
Shan also said that in order to keep the original look of the palace, by 2020, the museum's 600th birthday, any modern buildings will be moved out of the site.
