Liu Kuiling (1885-1967) is hailed as a self-taught all-around artist of Chinese painting.

His paintings are now being displayed at an exhibition at the Poly Art Museum, together with works of his son Liu Jilu (1918-83) and granddaughter Liu Nan.

The exhibition celebrates the family's commitment to extending the frontiers of Chinese painting.

Liu Kuiling carved out a niche in the art history especially for vivid portrayal of animals. He was inspired by oil painting and Japanese painting to invent several techniques.

Liu Jilu enriched his father's art legacies and especially demonstrated versatility in painting comic books. And his daughter Liu Nan has been influenced by Western art when studying abroad.
