Although normally a symbol of knowledge and warmth among local residents, bookstores are seldom considered a sightseeing spot for tourists. Eslite Bookstore in Taipei is one of the few exceptions.
Established in 1989, it now has 49 branches across Taiwan and is listed high on visitor itineraries.
The bookstore has made a name for itself by offering two special services. In 1999, its headquarters in the Daan district of Taipei extended its opening hours around the clock. The 24-hour service, coupled with the store's relaxing atmosphere, reinforced its reputation as a sanctuary for local residents, especially office workers and students, some of whom even pay daily visits to the bookstore.
Eslite Bookstore's headquarters is a five-story building with various sections. In addition to books, it sells music CDs, movie DVDs and stationery. It also provides drinks and snacks in a rest area.
The other service that has distinguished Eslite Bookstore's from others is the array of cultural events it regularly hosts. A feature story on the bookstore in the latest issue of "Trends" magazine notes that it holds 500 book talks or exhibitions annually. The bookstore also publishes a bestseller list that is considered a valuable and credible resource for book studies.
Most of Taipei's Eslite Bookstores are located downtown, which makes them very convenient stops for people coming out of nearby restaurants and shopping malls.
