China supports resolving the Syrian crisis within the framework of the Arab League (AL) and has called for relevant sides to fully coordinate with the AL, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Wednesday.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin made the remark during a press briefing when asked to comment on the Syrian situation.
China supports the constructive efforts made by the AL in promoting a political approach to the Syrian issue and hopes the AL observer mission will continue to fulfill its duties in Syria, Liu said, adding that China hopes all relevant parties will join hands to create conditions for the settlement of the Syrian crisis.
Liu said safety conditions have improved in several major areas of Syria since the AL observer mission began to perform its duties, although violence in Syria has not been completely erased.
In response to a question regarding China's thoughts on the prospect of the involvement of the UN Security Council, Liu said the council's involvement will be conducive to easing the situation in Syria and will help to safeguard the peace and stability of the Middle East at large.
Regarding a new Russian draft resolution to the Syrian issue forwarded to the UN Security Council, Liu said China appreciates the constructive efforts made by Russia to solve the Syrian crisis and is willing to continue to participate in consultations based on the Russian draft.
