It is a common practice for newly hired instructors to pass rounds of trial lectures before taking up a teaching post in military-civilian training organizations. However, at the beginning of February 2012, Zhu Dan, a senior instructor with over 10 years' teaching experience from the artillery training base under the General Staff Headquarters (GSH) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), also received a notice for trial lectures. "Why is a senior lecturer asked to give trial lectures?" In response, Guo Chunsheng, commander of the base, explained, "We are all 'pupils' in front of the brand new training tasks。"
In order to promote the quality of the faculty to adapt to new tasks, the base organized intensive job-transfer training. The base selected 27 instructors and sent them to study in military universities and colleges. The base invited experts and professors to give lectures and asked commanders of troop units to introduce their demands for talents and the features and laws of non-commissioned-officer contingent' construction. In addition, the base also improved the evaluation system for the teaching quality and took the appraisal results as references of instructors' promotion.
To date, more than 40 teaching materials and textbooks compiled by the base have passed the examination, 70 instructors have successfully concluded trial lectures and the base is ready to teach the first group of students.
