Vice President Xi Jinping met with Thai Minister of Defence Sukumpol Suwanatat on Thursday morning and called for deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

"The Chinese side places great importance on and treasures the traditional friendship between China and Thailand," Xi said.

He described the establishment of the partnership as a milestone event, adding that it conforms with the common aspiration of the two peoples.

Sukumpol is heading a top-brass delegation from the armed forces of Thailand to visit China. The delegation consists of commanders of the army, navy and air forces.

Xi pointed out that military-to-military links form an important part of the China-Thailand partnership. Expressing satisfaction about the rich results of military cooperation over the years, Xi said he hopes the two sides can increase exchanges and further advance friendly cooperation between the militaries.

According to Sukumpol, Thailand and China have respected each other and established a friendly, kinsman-like relationship over the past years. The Thai side treasures the cooperation and places importance on developing military-to-military links with China, he said, expressing readiness to strengthen contact and deepen military cooperation.

State Councilor and Defense Minister Liang Guanglie also held talks with Sukumpol on Thursday afternoon. Liang said the Chinese side is ready to work with Thailand to deepen communication and cooperation in the new era.

Sukumpol thanked the Chinese side for its assistance during the floods in Thailand last year.
