China will begin a new round of security checks concerning the protection of core defense research and production facilities on Friday, according to a press release from the General Staff Headquarters of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).
Inspectors are scheduled to visit the provinces of Hunan, Zhejiang and Sichuan, where they will work to coordinate local economic construction efforts and military facility protection.
The inspection team consists of representatives from the PLA and the ministries of public security, finance, state security and housing and urban-rural development, as well as representatives from China's legislature.
In 2011, inspectors concluded their first round of security checks in seven provinces and municipalities, deciding afterward to erect billboards that differentiate military zones from public areas.
China created its law on military facility protection in 1990. Under the law, both military organs and local government administrations are obligated to protect military facilities.
Local governments are required to take note of military facilities while working on development or tourism projects.
