Two quakes of magnitude-4.5 and magnitude-4.9 occurred in Shidian County, Baoshan City of the southwest China's Yunnan Province at 11:20 and 11:21 successively on September 11, 2012, leaving 5 people injured, 89,906 persons affected, 135 civilian houses collapsed, 12,000-plus houses damaged to varying degrees, nearly 26 kilometers of highway disrupted as well as electricity and communication facilities impaired, resulting in up to over 102.52 million yuan of direct economic losses according to preliminary statistics.
After the disaster occurred, the Baoshan Detachment of the Chinese People's Armed Police Force (APF) immediately activated the emergency pre-plans and went all out for emergency rescue and disaster relief. A total of 110 officers and men led by Su Qianhu, commander of the detachment, rushed to the disaster-hit area with rescue and emergency equipment by motorized means at 11:50, becoming the first rescue troop unit to arrive at the area.
Due to the severe situation, 100 officers and men of the 2nd echelon of the detachment sped to the disaster-hit area at 17:00 sharp to take on laborious jobs for 12 straight hours, including transferring the wounded, rescuing and transporting victims' goods, eliminating dangerous buildings and setting up tents. Under the risks of the aftershocks, the APF servicemen managed to transfer 1,000-plus pieces (sets) of victims' goods, demolish 23 dangerous houses and set up 60-odd tents within only eight hours after the quakes.
At this moment, the APF servicemen are still battling bravely in the front line of the quake-fighting and disaster relief.
