The 7-metre-by-1.5-metre corridor at No. 29 Da’er Hutong in Xicheng district, which is going for 137,600 yuan per square metre, is being targeted at parents hoping to enroll their children in the Beijing First Experimental Primary School’s Qianmen Branch. The area can be used only to register a hukou, or permanent residency, to enable access to the school, according to housing agents. Previous buyers had tried to build a small room in the corridor to house people, but those moves led to disputes with residents who regularly use the corridor for access.
Owning property within school districts means gaining greater access to better public schools.
Property in these areas are often sold at a high premium and are in hot demand in the megacities like Beijing and Shanghai.
