China urges the Philippines to work together with the Chinese side to appropriately address a confrontation off the coast of Huangyan Island, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said Friday.
Liu made the remarks at a regular press briefing while commenting on the confrontation that took place between Chinese fishermen and Philippine vessels in the waterway.
He said Huangyan Island is an integral part of Chinese territory. Actions from the Philippine side have infringed upon China's sovereignty and violated the consensus of maintaining the peace and stability of the South China Sea, not complicating and aggravating the situation.
China has sent law enforcement ships to ensure the safety of Chinese fishermen and vessels, "which is a routine move," said Liu, adding that China has made solemn representations to the Philippines in both Beijing and Manila.
Earlier this week, a Philippines warship entered waters off Huangyan Island in the South China Sea and cited "protecting sovereignty" as an excuse to harass Chinese fishermen.
