China urges restraint in Mali political transition

2012-05-04 10:57 Xinhua     Web Editor: Su Jie comment

The Foreign Ministry on Thursday urged concerned parties in Mali to maintain restraint and ensure the smooth completion of the political transition there.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin made the remark at a regular press briefing while commenting on the recent situation in Mali.

Liu said China is deeply concerned about the development of the situation in Mali, particularly the fighting that has occurred in the country's capital of Bamako.

Liu said China believes relevant parties should address their disagreements through dialogue and discussions in order to maintain the country's constitutional order.

Shooting erupted on Monday in Bamako in a clash between presidential guards and soldiers loyal to CNRDRE, a junta that claimed control of a camp of presidential guards on Tuesday. The guards had launched a counter-coup the previous day.
