China stresses political resolution for Syria issue

2012-12-18 08:27 Xinhua     Web Editor: Liu Xian comment

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman on Monday again called for a political resolution to the Syrian issue and urged the start of a political transition process led by the Syrian people.

"We have set forth our position on the current situation in Syria many times. China is deeply concerned about the ongoing violence in the country. A political solution is in the Syrian people's fundamental interests, as well as the common interests of the international community," said spokeswoman Hua Chunying.

She made the remarks at a regular press briefing while commenting on the current situation in Syria.

Last week's "Friends of Syria" meeting, which was attended by some Arab and Western governments in Morocco, recognized the National Coalition for the Opposition Forces as "the legitimate representative" of the Syrian people.

On Sunday, in a bid to squash the rebels in southern Damascus, Syrian fighter jets bombed the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp, killing eight people.

However, Syrian Vice President Faruq al-Sharaa said that neither the government nor the rebels could grab a decisive victory as the conflict drags on.

Hua again urged all parties in Syria to cease fire and start a political transition process led by the Syrian people on the basis of the Geneva communique as soon as possible, in order to restore security and stability in the country.
