China plays constructive role in Myanmar crisis

2013-01-24 09:32 Xinhua     Web Editor: Mo Hong'e comment

China has played a constructive role in resolving the conflict in Myanmar, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Wednesday.

In response to a question about China allegedly supplying arms to minority militia in northern Myanmar, Hong said China has always insisted on the peaceful resolution of the conflicts in Myanmar through dialogue and negotiation between the two parties.

He said China has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire and joint efforts to maintain peace and security in areas around the China-Myanmar border.

The Myanmar government announced early this week that it would stop fighting with the ethnic Kachin Independence Army in the northern areas bordering China. The latest conflict had raised concern in China, which shares a 2,200-km border with Myanmar.

The ceasefire came after the Chinese government's special envoy Fu Ying traveled to Yangon and met with Myanmar President U Thein Sein on Saturday.
