A spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry on Friday reiterated the country's belief that a political solution is the only pragmatic way out for the Syrian crisis.
Spokesman Hong Lei also expressed China's firm support of the mediation efforts of UN-Arab League joint special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi.
Hong made the remarks at a daily news briefing in response to a new proposal presented to the UN Security Council by Brahimi.
According to Al Hayat, an Arabic-language daily newspaper, Brahimi has presented six points to the Security Council for a resolution, including adopting a "principle of dialogue" among Syrians.
Hong said China supports the UN in playing a more active role in resolving the Syrian issue through political means.
"China is willing to keep close communication with all parties, so as to settle the crisis impartially, peacefully and properly," he added.
Hong also called on the international community to follow the objectives and principles set forth in the Action Group Geneva Communique, and urged both the Syrian government and opposition forces to call a ceasefire and end the violence.
Hong also urged the opening of a political dialogue at an early date, to find a solution that is accepted by all relevant parties for setting the roadmap for a political transition and establishing a transitional body.
