China on Monday urged Japan to take strong measures to effectively deal with the aftermath of the March 2011 nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power station.

During the International Atomic Agency (IAEA's) board of governors' meeting, Chinese governor Wang Yiren said the post-tsunami contaminated water accident at the TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company) plant should be brought under control as soon as possible to minimize a negative impact on the surrounding environment.

He added neighboring countries, regions and the international society should be regularly updated about any progress made.

Since the Fukushima accident, the Chinese government has implemented a series of measures aimed at further strengthening nuclear safety in China, Wang Yiren said, adding China would continue actively participating in the agency's nuclear safety action plan.
