China calls for dialogue on Syria crisis

China on Wednesday called for dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition as a UN Security Council draft resolution on humanitarian assistance was raised.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying made the remarks at a daily news briefing in response to a question on China's stance on the resolution drafted by Australia, Jordan and Luxembourg. Russia said the draft is being used by some countries to pave the way for military intervention in Syria.

On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov described the draft resolution on Syria as "counterproductive" and the ideas proposed by Western partners as "absolutely one-sided and detached from reality."

Lavrov said that the proposals on aid access ignored the efforts to deliver aid to Syria and blamed the Syrian government for the situation, He believes it is the rebels who are hampering supplies.

When asked whether China will work with Russia to veto the draft resolution, Hua said on Wednesday that all parties concerned are still consulting with each other on the issue and "we should not preempt the result of the discussion."

"Currently, the international community should not only make joint efforts to alleviate the humanitarian situation in Syria, but create conditions for the two parties to push ahead with dialogue and negotiations," said the spokeswoman.
