The Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman has slammed foreign responses to a Chinese policy document on Hong Kong.
Hong Kong affairs are wholly the internal affairs of China, which will not allow any foreign countries to interfere in or point fingers at it, Hua Chunying said at a media conference on Thursday.
When answering questions about the United States and Britain's response to China's release of a white paper on Hong Kong, Hua emphasized that Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China.
"We advise people in these countries to carefully read the white paper and do more things that are conducive to the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong," she said.
The Chinese government released "The Practice of the 'One Country, Two Systems' Policy in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the U.S. State Department and the U.K. General Consulate in Hong Kong both issued critical statements on it.
"We have noticed the reports," Hua said.
She said that since the return of Hong Kong to China's administration in 1997, the region has maintained prosperity, stability and development.
While noting that the practice of the "one country, two systems" policy has been successful, the spokeswoman admitted it has run into some new situations and problems.
She said that by issuing the white paper, the Chinese government comprehensively elaborated on one of the central government's consistent and basic guidelines on Hong Kong. "It will help all parties concerned attain deeper understanding of the 'one country, two systems' policy and the Basic Law of the special administration," according to Hua.
