China urged the Vatican to create conditions for better bilateral ties on Wednesday following a telegram sent by Pope Francis to Chinese President Xi Jinping.
"We are willing to have constructive dialogue with the Vatican based on relevant principles," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying at a press briefing in response to a question about the telegram.
China has on several occasions stated its conditions for improving relations with the Vatican. Specifically, the Vatican should cut its so-called "diplomatic ties" with Taiwan and recognize the People's Republic of China as the sole government representing China. The country has also asked the Vatican to stop interfering in China's internal affairs in the name of religion.
"China is always sincere in improving ties with the Vatican, and has been making efforts to this end," Hua said.
