Two female spotted deer are captured at Maoergai area of Songpan county in southwest China's Sichuan province recently. Spotted deer are China's national first-level protected animals. The total number in China is less than 1,000, with about 200 in the border areas of Anhui, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces, nearly 100 in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and about 500 in northern Sichuan and southern Gansu areas.
