The main culprit in a series of tomb robberies was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by the Intermediate People's Court of Chaoyang city in Liaoning Province on April 14, 2016. At the end of 2014, a great number of valuable relics went missing after many tombs and sites in the ancient city were robbed. The following investigation nabbed 225 suspects, busted 12 gangs and recovered 2,063 items including 248 top-grade state cultural relics. It was the largest tomb robbery case since 1949.
