A paper mill in Yangbei Village, Changting County, East China’s Fujian Province. The third generation of a paper-making family, Zhang Zihui has run the mill for 18 years and kept the traditional techniques that originated 1,800 years ago almost intact in the remote village. Paper-making used to be the main income source for local people thanks to the abundant bamboos. Now, there are only several mills still in operation as younger people tend to leave hometown to work in big cities. Workers in the mill usually work for 15 hours a day and earn 100 yuan ($15). It involves time-consuming procedures to make paper from bamboos, such as soaking, dehydration, compressing and drying. (Photo: China News Service/Yuan Hongmei)
