An enormous rift has opened up in a section of the Antarctic ice shelf spanning about 91 meters. The Larsen C Ice Shelf is gradually breaking up and will eventually produce an iceberg before it disintegrates entirely. A team of researchers flew over the gigantic crack in the ice and calculated it to be about 113 kilometers long, more than 91 meters wide and about 531 meters deep. Larsen C lies next to a smaller ice shelf that disintegrated in 2002 after developing a crack similar to the one now growing in Larsen C.(Photo/NASA)
