Police officer Yang Fuming inspects the Qingshui River Railway Bridge in Xingyi County, Southwest China’s Guizhou Province. The bridge on a railway line connecting Nanning City in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Kunming City in Yunnan Province is over the deep gorge of the Quigshui River and is one of the highest railway bridges in the world, at 183 meters high. Yang has secured the bridge for 12 years and he will retire in May. Local police authorities had suggested Yang spend Spring Festival, China’s Lunar New Year, with his family, but Yang insisted on working the holiday, saying “this is my last duty and I feel bad to leave earlier”. As the bridge is located in a remote area, Yang is the only police officer in the area, and he often feels alone, so he has a habit of reading aloud for 10 minutes every day to help maintain his verbal communication skills.
