Nan Erpu was born in 1992 in Hedong Village in Yuxian County, North China’s Shanxi Province. At 20, she was captured by Japanese soldiers and kept for 20 months as a comfort woman. She was unable to have children due to her treatment during the war. In 1964, she adopted a child - Yang Xiulian. Due to illness and stress, Nan committed suicide in June 1967, age 45.
